Why is Creative Expression great for mental health?

  • Manage Stress.

Art Therapy helps manage stress and put clients in a state of “flow”. When expressing oneself through art, things that cannot be said with words come out in one’s creativity, acting as a relief to many clients.

  • Promote Self-Esteem.

When creating, clients realize their potential; by actualizing something that did not exist before. This can act as a strong self-esteem booster. Through the art of creation, the body produces dopamine, encouraging drive, motivation, and concentration.

  • Enhance Brain Connectivity.

Each time a new activity is learned, the brain forms new neural connections. Creating art in particular increases resistance to stress and psychological resilience. Art is a meditative and rewarding way to aid in mental health and emotional well-being; helping to give voice to suppressed emotions. Source.

Creative Therapy in Practice

I have had the pleasure of utilizing Creative Therapy Modalities to program plan and facilitate for various populations; tailoring to the needs of each client. In the photo on the right, I facilitated an art therapy self-portrait group and 1:1 discussion, directing fellow students & volunteers to share their own expressive arts knowledge. By the end of this session, clients were extremely happy with what they were able to create, making my job even more rewarding!

Creative Therapy for Anxiety

Creative Therapy is extremely useful for anxiety. Through the covid-19 pandemic, I have seen an influx of anxiety cases and stress levels. Because of this, I began running anxiety workshops for children and adults using Creative Therapy. Each session resulted in the clients feeling more relaxed and expressive with their emotions than when they began.
